The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide financial assistance approximately Rs.10 billion (US$ 90 million) for the implementation of Jaffna and Kilinochchi water supply and sanitation project in line with the government's target of providing safe drinking water for all citizens, Director Information, M.G.Jayatissa said yesterday.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US$90 million in loans to help Sri Lanka restore water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the war-ravaged north, a statement said. The project, due for completion by February 2017, will help restore and modernise key infrastructure damaged by war or which deteriorated as a result of neglect mainly in the Jaffna Peninsula.

A massive water supply project for the Jaffna peninsula from the Iranaimadu tank in Kilinochchi was launched by Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardene on Friday, following a directive from President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Minister Gunawardene said the Iranaimadu-Jaffna water supply project was a remarkable task as far as water for the Jaffna peninsula was concerned.

A special meeting of the Sri Lankan cabinet chaired by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa held at Kilinochchi town in the northern province yesterday approved a proposal for an emergency loan of 150 million US dollars from Asian Development Bank (ADB) for re-construction of the damaged power and water infrastructure in the northern and eastern provinces.
