COLOMBO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's supreme court on Friday threw out a challenge to President Mahinda Rajapaksa's January re-election by his jailed rival, former army chief Sarath Fonseka. Fonseka garnered 40 percent to his former commander-in-chief's 59 percent at the Jan. 26 poll, which prompted the former general to accuse the president of rigging the vote and then sue to have the results nullified.

Politics is about power and the constitution is about protection of the people against the excessive concentration and exercise of that power. Politicians need power to govern and people need government to establish the framework, which facilitates the exercise and enjoyment of their fundamental rights and freedoms. Whilst it may well be a done deal by the time this gets into print, it is worth still raising the question of as to whether the 18th Amendment to the Constitution protects the people or privileges those in power to the extent that the people’s exercise and enjoyment of their rights could be imperiled.

COLOMBO — The Sri Lankan government has approved lifting the two-term limit for presidents in a move that would allow incumbent Mahinda Rajapakse to run for office again, an official said Friday. Rajapakse, 64, came to power in 2005 and has increased his firm grip on power since defeating the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels in May last year after nearly four decades of bloody ethnic conflict.

The Supreme Court granted interim relief in a Fundamental Rights petition filed for the release of (retd) General Sarath Fonseka by granting visits of his immediate family members and medical attention of his choice and also the access of his attorney but did not grant his release.
