Sri Lanka parliament Thursday evening adopted the motion by the government to extend the state of emergency for another month with a majority of 81 votes. 98 parliamentarians from the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its constituents voted for the motion, parliamentary sources said.

Thanks to the Presidential election, over 700 Tamil suspects who were arrested under the Emergency Regulations and the Prevention of Terrorism Act will heave a sigh of relief as the government is expecting to release them soon. Some of the suspects are in remand prisons for more than ten years without facing any charges.

COLOMBO — Sri Lanka's main opposition vowed on Tuesday to immediately end the state of emergency that has been in place on the island for 27 years if its presidential candidate wins this month's election.
