Professor of Electrical Engineering, Ratnajeevan Hoole, University Grants Commission coordinator for engineering, Jaffna University , fled the country last week after the EPDP leader, Douglas Devananda initiated legal proceedings against him. He granted an interview to LAKBIMAnEWS from his temporary base in London . Excerpts:

(July 23, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) The EPDP, supposedly a former armed group which continues to be represented by gun-toting cadres led by Minister Douglas Devananda, is the main Tamil ally of President Rajapakse. The violent EPDP seemed the only way in which the President can show Tamil support and therefore it has become his most crucial ally in warding off calls for war crimes inquiries on the grounds that Tamils support him.

Prof. S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole was recently appointed as the Coordinator for the University of Jaffna’s Engineering Faculty by the University Grants Commission. Prof. Hoole who had to leave the country due to the threats he received from the LTTE is now back in Jaffna with the intention of establishing an Engineering Faculty for the University of Jaffna. Professor Hoole shares his views with the Sunday Observer in establishing an Engineering Faculty in Jaffna.

Names of three professors have been shortlisted to be the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna. The top three out of 12 contestants were elected during the weekend by 21-member Senate of the University of Jaffna. Following the Senate meeting, Professor Ms. Vasanthy Arasaratnam, who received 14 votes to finish on top and incumbent Vice Chancellor N. Shanmugalingham and Professor Ratna Jeevan Hoole, who obtained 9 votes each, were shortlisted for the post. Their names have been sent to the President for the final ratification.Professor Ratna Jeevan Hoole who was attached to the Engineering Faculty of the University of Peradeniya, was appointed in 2006 by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Vice Chancelor of the University. But following LTTE threats, he was forced to migrate to the US with his family.
