In recent months, issues relating to alleged violations of human rights and war crimes during the final stages of the civil war (ie early 2009) have acquired prominence in international forums and the media. On June 14, for example, UK's Channel 4 broadcast a documentary, 'Sri Lanka's Killing Fields', which included alleged video evidence of war crimes. This furore has raised questions about the effect of these allegations on post-war development and reconciliation.

A procession to show solidarity with President Mahinda Rajapaksa was held in Jaffna on Tuesday morning, reports from the area said.
The event organised by the SLFP Jaffna branch was held in the town with the supporters chanting slogans and carrying banners condemning the events in London where Tamil groups held protests agaisnt the President.
Over 1,000 supporters took part in the event.

Statement issued by Mr Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka
For security reasons the speech by His Excellency President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka at the Oxford Union, the home of free speech, has been cancelled. This is a decision that has been made unilaterally by the Oxford Union, reportedly as a result of pressure applied by pro-LTTE activists.
