The Union (Nevada)
Jonika Weerasekare (pronounced VEER-uh-SAKE-uh-rah) is half Sri Lankan — probably, he jokes, the only Sri Lankan in Nevada County.
But the 16-year-old incoming Nevada Union High School senior had never been to his father's homeland until this summer, when he spent more than a month teaching English to boys making their way through the poor island nation's correctional system.
