On directives of Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, troops of the 1 Field Engineers Regiment serving under the SF-J last month commenced de-mining work of the moat around the historical Jaffna Fort which is being reconstructed by the Archaeological Department with financial aid of the Netherlands.

This time archaeology rather than conservation is motivating the Government of the Netherlands to contribute Rs. 104 million towards reconstruction of the Jaffna Fort. The reconstruction will be directed by the Department of Archaeology under Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. The photo gallery below (courtesy Perambara) shows the ruined fort as it stands today. The Ministry of National Heritage and Cultural Affairs yesterday said ground work to restore the Dutch Fort in Jaffna city had begun, the Dutch Fort was badly destroyed during the Eelam war.
