In just over a year, Jaffna peninsula has seen the visit of two Foreign Secretaries to the sites of a prestigious Indian housing project. In more than a year, a mere 52 of the 1,000 houses meant for the war-affected Tamils have been built. A total of 50,000 houses are to be built.

Houses and shops along Pamankada Road, Wellawatte were torn down in an attempt to widen the road. The occupants said they were given only a day’s notice before their houses were broken down. According to residents, even though they were paid Rs.125,000 per perch, they weren’t given enough time to move, or find a temporary residence, nor did the Government make any attempt to relocate them.

A pilot project of building houses for the internally displaced persons (IDPs)s in Jaffna will begin soon. Initially, 1000 houses will be built and 49,000 will be added later.

India has asked Sri Lanka to expedite the construction of houses for Internally displaced persons (IDPs) as part of the rehabilitation process and the latter has promised to take it up after the monsoon period, Union home minister P Chidambaram said today.
