A Sri Lankan military court on Friday convicted the former army chief, who ran for president this year, of fraud. He could be sentenced to jail time. The army chief, Sarath Fonseka, left, was dishonorably discharged after an earlier court-martial conviction. He has described the prosecutions as a political vendetta and has said their aim is to persecute him for daring to challenge President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the election. General Fonseka carried out a successful counterinsurgency campaign that ended more than two decades of war against the Tamil Tiger rebels, and he had been a close ally of the president. Mr. Rajapaksa won handily, and soon after General Fonseka was arrested.
