An explosion yesterday in a commercial area of Sri Lanka's capital wounded nine people, police said, adding that Tamil Tiger rebels were not responsible. Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said the authorities had ruled out terrorist involvement and blamed the incident on a personal vendetta. The blast in Pettah was believed to have been caused by a hand grenade or improvised explosive device, which went off under an apple stall shortly before dawn. Four off-duty soldiers were among the nine people who suffered minor injuries and were later hospitalised. AFP
