We last featured Rohan Edrisinha in February, just after the Presidential election on 26th January. Rohan, who lectures at the Law Faculty, University of Colombo, at the time flagged serious concerns over the implementation of the 13th and 17th Amendments, as well as the tragic irrelevance of the APRC in the process of constitutional reform.

July 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to meet Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe for extensive talks. The discussion will be held in the President's official residence Temple Trees on Tuesday, August 03.

(Reuters) - Sri Lanka's president and opposition leader have struck a broad deal on constitutional changes, chief of which is a plan to return the Indian Ocean island nation to leadership by an executive prime minister.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Peoples Alliance and Ranil Wickremesinghe’s main opposition UNP have agreed, in principle, to alter the Constitution to create an Executive Prime Minister post. In 1978, J.R. Jayawardene used his majority to replace a British-style Parliamentary system with a French-style Parliament plus Executive Presidency. Now it seems that Mahinda is using his majority to return to a Parliamentary system and create a powerful Prime Minister’s post which he could occupy, without term limits, as long as he has party support.
