Reflecting the political divide in Sri Lanka, pro- and anti-government demonstrations have been taking place in the capital, Colombo. A pro-government rally was held in protest against the British broadcaster Channel 4 which has recently aired two programmes alleging that Sri Lankan forces committed war crimes. In a smaller demonstration, journalists blamed pro-government elements for severely beating up a Tamil journalist in northern Sri Lanka last week.

The buzz word in the political lexicon of the Sinhalese in the past weeks has been ‘Sovereignty’ — Swaireebawaya (in Sinhala). We say Sinhalese because Tamils have ceased to speak on politics for quite sometime. Political sovereignty — as anyone who ventures to discover its precise meaning, will find a bewildering number of definitions. The closest interpretation of our ardent defenders of sovereignty is: The right of a nation to defend its national interests free from external interference.
