Houses and shops along Pamankada Road, Wellawatte were torn down in an attempt to widen the road. The occupants said they were given only a day’s notice before their houses were broken down. According to residents, even though they were paid Rs.125,000 per perch, they weren’t given enough time to move, or find a temporary residence, nor did the Government make any attempt to relocate them.

Students from the Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts of Jaffna University enjoyed a very rare opportunity today on 11 April when they visited Colombo for an educational trip. It is the first time in their lifetime these students have visited southern part of Sri Lanka. They met President Mahinda Rajapaksa when they visited Temple Trees this afternoon.

Colombo Chief Magistrate, Rashmi Singapuli, Tuesday ordered remand for 48 Tamils, all residents of Jaffna, till March 27, legal sources in Colombo said. Terrorist Intelligence Division (TID) of Sri Lanka Police last week arrested fifty two persons, including four children less than 10 years of age, while they were staying in lodges in Colombo and Negombo.

A Tamil Nadu MP and his two associates were deported from Colombo international airport early Tuesday after they attempted to enter Sri Lanka to attend slain Tiger chief V Prabhakaran’s mother’s funeral in Jaffna. President of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (Panther’s Party) T. Thirumavalavan, known for pro-LTTE sentiments, had taken an early morning flight from Chennai. He landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport at around 2 in the morning.
