The Jaffna Government Agent, Emelda Sukumar said that the Norwegian based LTTE leader, Perinpanayagam Sivaparan alias Nediyavan, who has been arrested and produced before the Oslo Court, used to threaten her through e-mails and phone calls and ask her to resign from the post and stop working for the government.

The terrorists did everything they could to divide the people in the North and the South, physically and mentally. They destroyed the Northern railroad, blasted trains and stations and the entire railway infrastructure. The Yal Devi train, which linked the North and the South, used to be a household name in Sri Lanka. But the LTTE, which wanted to keep Tamil civilians under its iron grip, did not want the trains coming in. The last train to Jaffna had to abandon its mission midway on June 23, 1990. Afterwards, all trains to the North terminated in Vavuniya/Thandikulam until recently.

BY RAJIVA WIJESINHA I have now had an opportunity to read through what is supposed to be the Report of the Panel appointed by the UN Secretary General to advise him on what were termed accountability issued. The report has been leaked by the indefatigable Sanjana Hattotuwa, who does however note that he cannot confirm if this is the actual text. He adds that the UN has regretted the leak. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that the government was not perturbed over any allegations by human rights groups that accuse Sri Lanka of alleged human rights violations during the final stages of the battle against LTTE terrorists as Government troops had engaged in a battle in keeping with all humanitarian norms.

Professor Vasanthi Arasaratnam has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna. She is the first woman Vice Chancellor of the University. Prof. Arasaratnam joined the Medical Faculty of Jaffna as a lecturer, and was appointed as the head of the Faculty in 1990. In 2000 she was appointed as the first Dean of the Medical Faculty of Jaffna. Professor Arasaratnam succeeds Prof. K. Shunmugalingam as the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole was recently appointed as the Coordinator for the University of Jaffna’s Engineering Faculty by the University Grants Commission. Prof. Hoole who had to leave the country due to the threats he received from the LTTE is now back in Jaffna with the intention of establishing an Engineering Faculty for the University of Jaffna. Professor Hoole shares his views with the Sunday Observer in establishing an Engineering Faculty in Jaffna.

With the end of the three -decade conflict, a large number of Tamils living abroad is arriving daily to see their native places in the Jaffna peninsula. Most of the Tamil expatriates are returning to their birthplace to renew their relationship with their kith and kin and to assess the state of their assets which had due to the three- decades of terror that gripped the country. Tamil expatriates The current influx of Tamil expatriates into the peninsula has created an atmosphere of family reunion and healthy interactions among foreign returnees and their friends and relatives in the region. Unlike the other returnees, forty-two-year-old Selvathurai Kuhadhas came to his native home town Chavakachcheri in Jaffna a few weeks ago with an ulterior motive - to get rid of his ex-wife Shanthini who had divorced him in India, three years ago.
