Last weekend, many Lankans saw parts of the Channel 4 documentary, Sri Lanka's Killing Fields with its gruesome execution footage, for the first time. It was repeatedly telecast on prime time, between serials and Bollywood song shows, on a privately owned but considered to be pro-government channel. With one little difference with the disturbing documentary though - in this "original, unaltered" video those carrying out military-style executions were speaking, laughing and smirking in Tamil and not in Sinhala.

War crimes were committed by the military during the final days of conflict in Sri Lanka, a UN expert has said after reviewing footage showing unarmed men being shot dead from close range. Agency reports from Geneva quoted UN human rights expert, Christof Heyns, as saying that the shocking footage showed "definitive war crimes."

Artillery fire from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) positions targetted civilians inside the `no firing zone’ (NFZ) near the north eastern coast and bombed the United Nations (UN) hub, set up to aid displaced Tamils during the final stages of the civil war, the expert panel report to the UN has claimed. Hindustan Times has a copy of the "Report of the Secretary General’s panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka", which was submitted to the UN chief Ban Ki-moon’s office, earlier this month, but is yet to be made public.

These precautions were being taken as the world agency and the Sri Lanka government seemed headed for a diplomatic confrontation with the UN saying the expert panel’s report on human rights violations during the end of the Lankan civil war will be fully published.

The report to the United Nations on war crimes in Sri Lanka and an online magazine poll on the 100 most influential people kept the buzz alive in a mostly deserted Colombo this past week. The city had literally cleared out and traffic became a trickle as the country went in a holiday mode for the Sinhala and Tamil new year.
